Finally Part 2

So this weekend I got a lot of work done around the house!  I was so excited to finally have the windows and deck door open!  Saturday I spent a few hours cleaning the garage and painting as much of the walls as I had paint for.  I ended up running out of the paint I had so it’s still not complete but it’s good enough for me right now.

But I still feel good about getting that much done in there.  The paint covered nicely.   No more creepy green handprints!  There are still a couple of projects left to do in here besides finishing the walls.  The door has a few rust spots here and there so I’d like to try and get rid of that and repaint it.  And when we bought the house, the weather seal under the door to go into the house was gone so there’s a good sized gap.  We’ve put in a temporary fix but it’s not a complete seal so I want to get that done too.  No need to waste precious heat and air conditioning to the garage.

I made some good progress on the storage room too.  Alas, our brand new camera we had bought for our cruise is not working anymore so I haven’t been able to get the photos I took of the rooms before I started working on them this weekend.  I’ll just tell you that it was a huge mess in there.  So far I’ve thrown and recycled so much stuff from boxes!  We also have a decent pile accumulating to sell at my parent’s garage sale this summer.  I now have 4 empty boxes that used to be full of stuff.  I have plenty more to go through.  Then I will need to rearrange the shelves to maximize the space.  The rest of this week and weekend are going to be colder and rainy.  So I should have plenty of time to continue working on this project.

On a different note, this past week was the Hospital Auxiliary book sale.  I love love love books so I’m always excited when this comes around every year.  Tuesday through Thursday everything is priced as marked.  Friday is half price and Saturday is the $5 bag sale!  I went on Wednesday and got a few things but left a bunch of things I hoped would still be there on Saturday for the bag sale.  On Saturday morning I got up bright and early to be there right when it opened at 8am.  I ended up spending over 2 hours and came home with 3 bags full of books for only $15!!!!

Many of them will be books I will end up reading once and then selling at Half Price books but the ones I really like I will end up keeping.  I’m going to need more shelf space 🙂

Speaking of books and reading… I am way behind on my reading goal for this spring.  I’ve got one month left to get to my goal and I have only read 4 books 😦  Time to get cracking!!!

Finally!

So after a much extended winter (there was even a winter storm warning in effect last night!!) it is finally going to be nice weather this weekend!  It’s supposed to be mid to upper 60s and sunny!!!  🙂  I can’t wait!  I feel like I’ve been stuck inside forever!  I will finally be able to start the heavy duty cleaning and organization that I’ve been wanting to do all winter long!  Each weekend (and maybe some nights after work depending on how I feel) I will be tackling one area of the house.  This weekend I am going to concentrate my efforts on the garage and storage room.  Yes, I know that is two areas but they kind of need to go hand in hand with what I have planned.  So first things first… the garage.

When we bought the house, the previous owner had these creepy hand prints painted all over randomly in the garage.  There was a huge clump of them on one wall, and the entire door into the house was framed in them.  I guess I never took a photo of them straight on but I cropped this photo I took of the garage so you can kind of see it.

Before it got too cold this past fall I got a huge wind of energy and motivation and painted over every single handprint in the garage.  We had gotten a few free pints of paint from Ace Hardware when they were introducing the new brand Clark + Kensington for that exact purpose.  Just a basic medium grey color.  But now it looks incomplete with just the handprints painted over.  I have plenty of paint left and only two of the walls in the garage are drywall so I am going to paint over the entire walls to make it more uniform.  It’s just a garage so it doesn’t really matter but it bugs me a little.

Then I plan on sweeping out the whole garage and moving around some of the furniture we have in there.  I want to clear off as much surface space as possible for the next phase of the project.  I am going to gradually bring out boxes from our very unorganized storage room and sort through them.  We’re both going to look through everything we have and decide what we’re keeping, selling, donating or throwing away.  Hopefully this will get rid of a bunch of stuff but who knows…  We are both packrats at heart so this could backfire haha.  Once everything has been sorted I will take all of the items we are keeping and sort them into similar categories and box them back up.  To keep on with the organization theme, I’ll create a list of what types of things are in each box so we don’t have to open up every single box to find a particular item.  Then I’ll rearrange the shelves in the storage room to maximize the space and put everything away.

Here are photos of the garage and storage room shortly after we moved in.  The storage area is much messier now.

When this project is finished I’ll post the after photos.  I will do the same thing too as I continue to do other projects around the house.  I was going to post current photos of the garage and storage room but alas, as I was about to upload them my camera battery died.  I will post them in a part two post by this weekend.

Easter

I had a great little Easter vacation this past weekend.  We got Friday off at work and went down to Kansas City, Missouri to hang out with my aunt, uncle and cousins.  My parents, brother and brother’s girlfriend went too.  We all had a great time!  It’s always fun getting together with them.  Despite the fact that our age range amongst the cousins is 21-28, we did an Easter egg hunt and colored Easter eggs.  It was fun!  We each had a color of egg we were allowed to find and camoflauge eggs that anyone could take.  Each of our own colored eggs had special presents inside and the eggs ranged in size from the normal size to giant sized haha.

Oh, and they made us wear bunny ears on our heads as we searched.

We colored eggs both the usual way and we also tried something I had found on Pinterest.  Marbling the eggs using shaving cream!  It was messy but really fun!  I had so much fun that I ended up coloring 15 eggs total!

We played a couple of games of Settlers of Catan, which if you’ve never played before… PLAY IT!  I love that game!

On Easter morning we did the church thing and then had a huge Easter lunch.  It was amazingly delicious.  Each “kid” got an Easter basket with candy in it too!

My other cousin Jimmy’s dog, Dakota is even cuter! (Sorry Joe!)  She’s also much more mellow than Duke and you saw the photo of her with the bunny ears… So cute!

One of my favorite parts of this vacation was my aunt introducing me to the awesomeness that is Cook’s Illustrated magazine!  Not only does this magazine have awesome recipes but it also explains WHY the recipe works as well as tips on the best tools and ingredients to use!  I spent quite a bit of time pouring over the magazines that she had and helping her cook many of the recipes.  In fact, the majority of the food we ate while down there was thanks to recipes from this magazine.  If you don’t know anything about this magazine or have never heard of it and you like cooking… check out this magazine!  I’ve always been interested in cooking but I never knew much about it.  This magazine helps shed light on all the aspects of cooking!  It was created by Christopher Kimball back in 1980.  You might know him from America’s Test Kitchen!  You can visit the magazine’s website here: http://www.cooksillustrated.com/

One of my presents in my Easter eggs was a copy of their latest edition of Make Ahead recipes.  I also bought a copy of America’s Test Kitchen All-Time Favorites and the current issue of Cook’s Country, which is another magazine put out by ATK.  I haven’t made any recipes from these magazines yet on my own, but I can’t wait to do it!  Both my husband and I are somewhat picky eaters so we have to sit down and decide what we would eat, and if there are non-essential ingredients that we would skip.
