Day 2: Twenty Facts About Me!

31 Day Blogging Challenge

Day 2 here for the 31 Day Blogging Challenge created by Erica @ Looking to the Stars!  Yesterday was a fun post but I especially liked today’s topic!  It was fun trying to think of twenty different facts about myself.  Here we go!

  1. I am obsessed with lip balms/chapstick and lotion.  If my lips are dry or my hands are dry and I don’t have these things I get cranky.  I hate hate hate the feeling of dry hands and dry lips.  My favorite lip balms are the EOS balls and my favorite lotions are from Bath & Body Works.
  2. Growing up I had nightmares of being attacked by cats so I used to be afraid of them.  Now I am fully over that fear and have two cats of my own.
  3. My favorite outfit consists for a hoodie sweatshirt, comfortable jeans and sneakers.  I love just being comfortable and laid back.
  4. My ideal climate would be a place with a temperature range of 50-75 degrees F, low humidity, plenty of sunshine and the occasional rainy day.
  5. I love nail polish and  having my nails painted but I have never had a professional manicure or pedicure.
  6. I like shopping for new clothes but HATE trying them on at the store.  Why can’t sizes just be universal?!?!?!
  7. The only Apple product I have ever liked is the iPod Classic and they have now gotten rid of it!  Screw you Apple.
  8. I love going to concerts!  I have seen groups from rock to pop to country.  My next concert is going to be Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney at Target Field this July!
  9. I currently own 695 movies on DVD and bluray.  See the list here!
  10. My ultimate dream is to one day travel to Ireland.  It has been my favorite country for as long as I can remember.
  11. I’ve been to 22 of the 50 states and hope to someday see them all.
  12. From pre-K through 4th grade I was at a different school every year because we moved around a lot.
  13. I am a very shy person around new people.  A lot of people mistake my shyness for me being a bitch.
  14. When I read a book I like to thumb through the pages I’ve already read.  It’s become a habit and sometimes I don’t realize I’m doing it until E tells me to knock it off.  What can I say?  I just like the sound it makes haha 🙂
  15. My parents, brother, two uncles, one aunt, one great uncle and I all graduated from the same college, Luther College.  Go Norse!
  16. I can’t stand football.  Most sports bore me to tears (with the exception of being at a game vs watching on tv) but there’s just something extremely irritating to me about football.
  17. I am terrified of turbulence on a plane, no matter how small it may be.  On our flights to Miami I was a mess, clutching on E’s leg so hard I think I cut off his circulation haha OOPS
  18. In a future home I would love to have a library.  Does not have to be anything fancy, just a room where I can keep all of my books in one place and have a cozy place to read.
  19. My husband and I grew up in the same small town but didn’t meet until he was 21 and I was 23.
  20. I am afraid of heights but got the courage to go upside down on the last segment of the zipline course at Whistler!  That was amazing!

Tune in tomorrow to hear about some of my daily rituals!

31 Day Blogging Challenge – Day 1: Introduction

For the next 31 days I am going to participate in a blogging challenge created by Erica @ Looking To The Stars!  Each day there will be a new topic to post about and I’m really excited to play along because these look like some fun topics to write about.

31 Day Blogging Challenge

Day 1: Introduction & Recent Photo

Most recent photo was taken on Christmas Eve (I take a lot of photos, just not of myself haha)

Hi everyone!  I’m Maren!  I’m a 28 year old Minnesota girl, born and raised.  Up until I was in the 5th grade my family moved around a lot but we always stayed in Minnesota with the exception of a sixth month period spent in Sioux Falls, SD.  My parents are awesome and have been married for almost 32 years.  I have a younger brother who is 24 and living in Chicago with his fiance.  He is one of my best friends.  I graduated with a bachelor of arts in History major and museum studies minor from Luther College in 2009.  After college I couldn’t find a job in my chosen field so I lived at home and worked a grocery store job I had had since I was 17.  While working there I met Ethan who was also working there and we have been together since October 2010.  Eight months later he proposed and another 6 months after that we were married.  Our 3rd anniversary is coming up in 9 days!  Shortly after our wedding we bought a townhouse and a month after that we got our first cat, Nika.  Three months later we got our second cat, Enzo.  We both love to travel and have so many places we want to go together.  For our honeymoon we went to Mackinac Island in Michigan.  And for our first wedding anniversary we went on a cruise to the Caribbean.  We currently do not have kids of our own but I have the most adorable 3 year old goddaughter I love to hang out with.

Currently I commute 45 minutes to my job where I work in a small company as a human resources/accounts payable/compliance combo.  I share an office with my dad, who is one of my favorite people in the world, so I get to see him 5 days a week.

I love reading and watching movies and TV shows.  I have massive collections of books, movies and TV seasons.  I just can’t help myself sometimes 🙂 I am an avid user of Goodreads so you can see what I’m reading there.  And I also have a book blog that I post reviews, book challenges and weekly memes.

I love being outdoors, especially away from cities.  I love going hiking and wish that I lived in an area closer to more exciting trails.  Southern MN doesn’t have much besides prairies and corn fields.

So that is a little bit about me!  Stay tuned to find out more over the next 31 days!

Update On An Old Project

Two years ago I had done an organization project with my DVDs and CDs in an effort to create more space.  I wrote this post about the completed project.  I took all of my DVDs and CDs and put them in paper sleeves and then put those sleeves in a fabric bin.  It saved a ton of space!  Alas, the DVD project was a complete waste because after a few months I got really sad not seeing all of my DVDs on a shelf anymore.  I know, pathetic and definitely #firstworldproblems.  So I had put all of the DVDs back in their cases and back on the shelves.  The CDs however I was fine leaving in the paper sleeves.  The only problem with the fabric bin was that it was pretty flimsy and was really heavy.  I happened to win a $50 Target gift card thanks to an awesome giveaway by Erica @ Looking To The Stars so today I went to my local Target and found some cool new bins that would work perfectly.  They are sturdy and a pretty color!  I also had some CDs that I needed to put in sleeves so today I finished up that project.

This is the original fabric bin with the CDs I still needed to put in sleeves.

IMG_20150115_181933I take the front inserts out and keep those in a plastic snap bin.

Then I pry apart the case and take the side title and tape that to the front of the sleeve.  Then on the back of the sleeve I tape the track listing and any art/photos that might be on the back.

IMG_20150117_194042Once I had all of the discs out of the fabric bin I set it down on the floor and Enzo decided that it was now his.

IMG_20150117_182716I also made new index tabs which I just cut up pieces of cardstock and used a bronze metallic Sharpie to write the letters.  The bins were Room Essential media bins that were $5.99 each.

IMG_20150117_194709Now my CDs are easier to access.  I don’t need to pull the entire flimsy fabric binder out.  I can just pull one out at a time so it won’t be as heavy.

Movie Collection

In addition to having large TV show and book collections I have a massive movie collection.  I’ve made lists over the years but always forget to update it so as of right now here is my movie collection.  Some are E’s but for the sake of this list, they are all of ours.  Titles in italics are free Ultraviolet copies I received.  (I may be missing a couple because I periodically loan movies to my grandma)

TV Season Collection

For the longest time I have loved watching tv shows and collecting the seasons on DVD and Bluray.  I think the first TV season I ever bought was Gilmore Girls season 1 and then proceeded to buy all the other available seasons the following day.  What can I say? They were on sale and it’s my favorite show.  One thing I have trouble with is trying to remember what seasons I already have.  So I’m going to make a list of all the ones I own, including Ethan’s so we don’t end up with duplicates.  These are in no particular order.

  • Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman – complete boxed set
  • Dawson’s Creek – complete boxed set
  • Charmed – complete boxed set
  • Horatio Hornblower – complete boxed set
  • 2 Broke Girls – season 1

  • Boston Legal – season 4
  • Burn Notice – seasons 1-3

What does your TV season collection include?

Whole30: 30 days of clean and healthy eating

Check out my brother and his fiance’s new blog about their journey during Whole30! As soon as Ethan and I can rid our house of all the processed crap food we already have we will be joining them! Big thanks to Steph for loaning me her copy of the book! Such an eye opener!

Change the way you think about your Diet

Steph and Jim here to jot down some of our opening thoughts as we start our journey through Whole30. We previously had written about, albeit very little, our diet and our prior relationship with food. After further reading, our relationship has transformed and we are going to be making a drastic change. Our goal for the next 30 days is to have a better relationship with the food that we eat and to be generally healthier people. We are going to try and achieve this goal through the plan that is laid out by the Hartwigs in the book It Starts With Food. This all stems from Steph ordering the book from Amazon a while ago after following the Whole30 instagram page, among countless other reading. After Steph read this book and seeing all the testimonials, she brought it to me and said “We have to do this!” So…

2015 New Year’s Goals

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a great New Year’s Eve last night!  We had a couple of friends over to celebrate.  Our friend Bill made us a delicious dinner!  Melon with prosciutto for an appetizer and carbonara for dinner.  It was so so so good!  Now today is the day I usually come up with my resolutions but I had them done a few days ago.  Instead of calling them resolutions though I’m going to call them goals, only because resolutions always seem to fizzle out by February.  So here are my goals for this year.

  1. Ease up on buying books.  Remember the library is only 2 miles away and I have plenty of books that I haven’t read yet but own.
  2. Get better organized for blogging.  I started off pretty organized but lately I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants.
  3. Pay off credit card by end of March.  I’m so close!  And then keep the balance at zero… If I buy something with it, pay it off right away!
  4. Pay off smaller student loan by September.
  5. No pop except for “special” occasions.  This one looks familiar!  I seem to try this one every year.  Let’s hope it sticks this time.
  6. Eliminate processed foods as much as possible.
  7. Get at least 60,000 steps per week.  I’ve been really slacking with my Fitbit the last few months.  I want to try to get back up there!

What are your goals for the year?
